Innovation is a hallmark of the AEC industry, and the hallmark that defines how structures and their component products have changed through the centuries. A current example of design innovation is the 450-kilometer highspeed rail corridor that is underway to connect the European capitals of Madrid, Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal. A centerpiece of the project is the Almonte Viaduct, a structure that spans the mouth of the Almonte River where it meets the Alcantara reservoir in the southwest of Spain. Completed for ADIF AV, the £46-million viaduct project was led by the joint-venture team of FCC Construction S.A. of Spain and CONDURIL of Portugal. The Spanish firm, Arenas y Asociados, developed the bridge design. Additional collaboration involved firms from Canada, Great Britain, Switzerland and Belgium.
