An Eye on Emissions: Lower-Carbon RCC Selected for Highway Shoulder Project in Alabama

Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) has many advantages in the way of speed, simplicity, durability and economics- and now lower carbon emissions. In a first for the U.S., A.G. Peltz Group, a specialty paving contractor and leader in RCC, placed more than 128,000 sq yd of 5-in. portland limestone cement (PLC) RCC along nearly 8 miles of highway. The project was part of the Alabama Dept. of Transportation's (ALDOT's) I-59 concrete rehabilitation and shoulder reconstruction project near Trussville, Ala. Crews used EcoCemPLC from Lehigh Hanson, a blended cement with a higher limestone content that reduced the concrete carbon footprint by about 10%, or about 550 tons. ALDOT and at least 32 other DOTs allow the use of PLC in their concrete specifications.
