Los Angeles Metro Rail's $9.8-billion Purple Line Extension required tele-handlers with no engines or electrical wiring so that workers could operate safely underground around methane gas. Xtreme Manufacturing, a Nevada-based manufacturer of heavy equipment and construction machinery, provided the ideal solution for this project. "We worked with Regional Connector Contractors, a joint venture between Skansa, Taylor Bros, and Shea, to develop permissible telehandlers," says Mike Coleman, Xtreme's business development manager. "Each unit is equipped with fire-resistant engines that are controlled with air starters and fitted with an air compressor, tank and hydraulic controls."
