America's First Fully Automated, Driverless Light-Rail System Coming Soon to Honolulu

To provide an efficient, reliable transportation alternative to commuters in one of Hawaii's most congested urban corridors, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation is building a 20-mile, elevated rail line along the south shore of O'ahu. This fully autonomous, urban light-rail system-the first in America-is slated to turn operational in 2025. A joint venture led by Shimmick Construction Co. is responsible for constructing 5.2 miles of new elevated guideway between Aloha Stadium to the Middle Street Transit Center Station. The team is also constructing four transit stations, relocating utilities, improving intersections and laying track along its portion of the railway.
