Access Challenge at Romania's Caracau Viaduct

Traditional access solutions for repairing the 73-year-old arch of Romania's Caracau Viaduct would have required hundreds of thousands of scaffold components, large work crews and extended work schedules. In addition, cantilevered concrete pedestrian walkways, extending 3 meters on either side of the railway bridge's tracks, prevented direct access to the arch, while the weather where the viaduct is located, in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, limited construction work to three seasons.
