Gephyrophobia, or the fear of bridges, may be grounded in reality for some because of infrastructure concerns for bridges. In April, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) reported that 47,052 of the 616,087 U.S. bridges are structurally deficient based on its analysis of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation 2018 National Bridge Inventory. The report found that: the pace of repair has slowed to its lowest point in five years; the average age of a structurally deficient bridge is 62 years; 235,000 bridges need repair, replacement or major rehabilitation; and 18,842 interstate highway bridges have identifiable repair needs.
