Structural Steel Research Changes the Game for Construction

Revolutionizing Tall BuildingsA new nonproprietary steel-concrete composite high-rise core wall system, or SpeedCore, currently being constructed in Seattle is revolutionizing the design and construction of tall buildings. The system, which is based on research sponsored by the Charles Pankow Foundation at Purdue University and AISC, and work performed by Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA), uses two steel plates connected by steel spacing ties with the cavity between the plates filled with high-strength concrete. It provides the potential to shave up to nine months off the construction schedule and reduce costs compared to a traditional concrete core system.
