Related Cos.' PLA Lawsuit Covers Key Union Concessions

The lawsuit filed by developer Related Cos. against the New York City building and construction trades in state court in Manhattan claims that unions routinely violated the 2013 pact covering work on Related's massive Hudson Yards project's first phase. That pact's terms contained many of the concessions that the individual unions have been making in recent years in order to retain their grip on big commercial construction work.Under pressure from union contractors, unions this past summer agreed to tiered wage systems, higher apprentice-to-journey-level ratios and relaxed work rules. Now Related has apparently given up its negotiation with the building trades over terms for the Hudson Yards' next round of construction and has filed a lawsuit against the Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York and its president, Gary LaBarbera.
