Governor's Island Continues to Develop as Premier Attraction

Governors Island, a gem located in New York Harbor, continues to evolve as a destination for tourists and New Yorkers alike. Under the auspices of the Trust for Governors Island, a majority of the former military base has been transformed into a recreational amenity combining parkland and historic resources with breathtaking views of the New York skyline. The LiRo Group, providing design review and resident engineering inspection services, has been an instrumental part of the process since the start of redevelopment.Work included the creation of 43 acres of new park space with dramatic topography, building stabilization and demolition, and a new 2.20-mile waterfront promenade, seawall and stone revetment. Critical infrastructure improvements encompassed ferry dock modernization, new potable water,new 5k switchgear, primary electrical distribution and drainage systems that reduced stormwater outflows to New York Harbor from 129 to 30. LiRo managed a staff of 20 while overseeing 30 tasks included within eight projects and multiple funding sources.
