Imploding Atlanta's Georgia Dome

The construction of the ultramodern Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) in downtown Atlanta sealed the fate of the aged Georgia Dome Stadium. Demolishing it by implosion less than 85 ft from the newly constructed MBS was a tall order. Home stadium of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons for 25 years and the Georgia State University Panthers football team, the Georgia Dome was built in 1992 and hosted the 1996 summer Centennial Olympic Games, 25 Peach Bowls, 23 SEC Championship Games, NFL Super Bowl XXVIII, NCAA Men's Final Four and many soccer matches. The structure, more than 770 ft long, 610 ft wide and 275 ft tall, included a cable-supported fabric domed roof anchored to a compression ring beam that was sustained by the superstructure.
