Electrically Heated Steam Engine Boiler Control

The content of this article was prompted by the desire to produce a clean, safe, reliable and foolproof method of raising steam to power small stationary steam engines and to initiate and promote an interest in mechanical objects for my 8 year old nephew. I had already constructed a simple oscillating engine with a solid fuel boiler, but the resulting fumes, smoke and residues raised, and almost singed, a few eyebrows in his London flat. So an alternative heat source was investigated, with electricity being decided upon. This also meant that the plant could be operated indoors rather than on the balcony.
