Such systems engineering education and training as I received counselled me to rationalise the discipline in terms of well-ordered, sequential models of technical and management action. For those less familiar with systems engineering this may be no bad thing. Yet this order and structure sat uncomfortably with the models I had intuitively built of how I, and how I thought others, conducted engineering in order to create and use complex systems.
