Dams Reconsidered

Hydroelectricity provides nearly 20 percent of the World's electricity supply. And, the 45,000 dams associated with such electricity are located in more than 140 countries. For the last two years the World Commission on Dams (WCD) oversaw a diverse forum of engineers, environmentalists, government officials, indigenous people, financiers, affected people and academics engaged in an unprecedented global public policy process studying the technical, financial and economic performance of dams as well as their environmental and social performance.
