Special issue on 'Building Research and the Sustainability of the Built Environment in the Tropics'

This special issue of Energy and Buildings presents papers given at the International Symposium 'Building Research and the Sustainability of the Built Environment in the Tropics'. The symposium was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 14 to 16 October 2002. The symposium was organised by Dr. Tri Harso Karyono and sponsored jointly by the University of Tarumanagara in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, UK. The symposium was held at the University of Tarumanagara which has a lively school of architecture. One morning of the conference, delegates arrived to be greeted by students rope climbing between the faculty buildings. The serious business of the conference was further enlivened for overseas participants by visits to central Jakarta and its unique folk museum. This museum reproduces at full-scale some of the diverse buildings which can be found in the 6000 inhabited islands which make up the Indonesian Archipelago (Figs. 1 and 2). Recent financial and social turmoil has left Indonesia, and particularly Jakarta, with big problems but there was a mood for reconstruction which suffused the proceedings of the conference.
