The average Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) wholesale price in the first quarter was $63.36 per megawatt hour, about 17.6% lower than the initial three months in 2008, the Market Surveillance Administrator (MSA) reports.rn"Strong wind, a declining natural gas price and the associated waning reference price were contributing factors to the observed soft pool prices," the MSA said in its quarterly review.rnJanuary's high average price of $92.97 per megawatt hour was primarily due to events in the Jan. 20 to 26 period.rnOver that period, the AESO market experienced high daily average prices of $282.87,$219.39 and$624.94 per megawatt hour - with the latter on Jan. 23 establishing a record.
