The linear-induction motor (LIM) is an AC motor in which the stator and rotor have been separated, with the former usually installed on the vehicle and the latter installed on the guideway. Because the stator, or wound part, of the motor is usually referred to as the LIM, this approach is described as LIM-on-vehicle. Certain applications reverse this arrangement and are called LIM-in-track. In both cases, thrust is transmitted through the air gap by magnetic flux, produced by three-phase currents, rather than through a shaft/gearbox/wheel arrangement of the conventional rotary motor. The subject of this paper is the application of the LIM to automated guideway transit (AGT) and the developments that permit this form of traction to support AGT operation in the realm of heavy rail capacities. LIM-propelled large people movers and line-haul transit systems are discussed, as is a recent example, the application of LIM traction to the Kuala Lumpur LRT System Two Project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which commenced implementation in November 1994.
