Cliffs and precipices never automatically make way for rivers. Mountains have always been obstructions to waterways and obstacles to the running current emptying itself to the sea. Long before humans appeared, the struggle between Yangtze River waters and scars on the undulated land had been waging, resulting in the victory of the water of life over insensate stones. Splitting the valleys, the Yangtze broke open a passage to the sea and ocean. This passage is the triad of the Three Gorges.
