In many countries of the world, the electricity industry is currently going through a period of restructuring. This article outlines the principles of the various restructuring models that are being employed and explains the resulting requirements and tools that are needed in order to perform in a deregulated energy market. Deregulation has consequences for the functions of power system control centers and for the type of performance demanded of them. Typical applications illustrate the developments.
