Requirements of staff - and by staff - for working over the Millenium period are still grey areas. This article looks at some of the issues causing problems and the legal obligations of staff and employers. The Millennium has, not surprisingly, attracted considerable media attention. Yet while national festivities are being planned, the business world has serious concerns relating to our ability to function effectively as we move into the twenty-first century. Every New Year, armies of workers forego the merrymaking to ensure that essential services are offered on a continuing basis. On 31 December 1999 it is anticipated that even more employees will be required to be at or available for work at short notice due to the potential dramatic effects of the infamous Millennium bug.
