Come September, seafaring fishermen in the country will get tamper-proof and machine-readable biometric identity cards as a first line of defence against attempts to infiltrate seaborne terrorists into mainland. The Kerala unit of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) will implement the scheme as a pilot project at Munambam in Kochi. Initially, 800 local fishermen will be included in the scheme. Subsequently, an estimated three lakh fishermen will be covered.
