Ford's vision made the US a world power

Centenaries are times of celebration. Most people and things still remembered so long after their births merit our respectrn- wars, dictators and Victorian light opera notwithstanding. But now consider the case of the Ford Model T.rnOn 27 September, it will be 100 years since the first popular motorcar emerged from a factory in Detroit. Yet, while festivities to mark this era-defining event have begun, the programme looks quite threadbare. You see, one of the great achievements in engineering and manufacturing has metasta-sised into a source of tremendous guilt. So much so that Time magazine recently dismissed the Model T as one of the 50 worst cars ever made.
