Digital versatile disk technologies: Versatility, capacity, and growing popularity

In the October 1999 issue of ES&T, we took a close look at the assem- blies and circuits that allow CD-ROM and DVD players to function. Within that article, we discussed the physical construction of the discs, the information encoding process, and the use of Dolby AC-3 audio and MPEG-2 video programming. The article also covered the application of electronic systems such as digital signal processors, optical pick-up units, microcontrollers, and audio-video decoders.
