Baseband-processing strategies for 3G base stations

Just like wireline networks, cellular wireless networks are evolving to accommodate the long-predicted change in traffic from mostly voice to mostly data. One example of this change is the introduction of cellular handsets that provide subscribers with convenient access to data services such as text messaging, e-mail, and even Internet access. The media and wireless industries have focused heavily on these devices in recent years and a great deal of attention has been given to the tremendous gains that semiconductor solution vendors have made in the area of component integration. Such integration, done at the baseband and RF level, was necessary to keep the devices as small and power efficient as possible to encourage their acceptance―and ultimately their use―by consumers.
