Most of today's integrated switcher ICs are designed for specific applications and have a well-defined power delivery range. Therefore comparing the power supply's specifications with those of the ICs under consideration will eliminate many contenders from the start. For example, if the power supply is ac/dc with a universal input voltage range that must deliver 100 W of power to its load(s), this automatically eliminates all lower-voltage dc/dc switcher ICs and all off-line devices with power limits under 100 W. Additionally, some ICs are tailored to work hest in certain topolog-ical configurations. So, if you are cost-reducing an existing flyback supply, you will want to pick an IC that works well when deployed in a flyback topology.
