Unexpected line-voltage transients and overcurrent modes are a significant factor in power supply failures, particularly those with semiconductor-based control, conversion/rectification, or regulation elements such as off-line, dc converter, inverter, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) types. In addition, smart power supplies―often providing regulated and precision dc power for electronic-components testing―are vulnerable through an integrated USB and other network interfaces.
