Demand for wireless sensors is exploding, with approximately 80 million wireless monitoring systems currently in use worldwide. The sensors serve a diverse array of applications including level monitoring, flow meters, dataloggers, building automation, HVAC products, smart battlefield sensors, structural stress gauges, vibration-monitoring systems, and mesh networks. Many applications thought to be wireless are not truly so in the sense that they still require hardwiring to ac power. Hard-wiring can be extremely costly, as installation of cable and wire is estimated at $18 to $40 per foot.
