It is estimated that by 2020, the Internet of Things, or IoT, will connect 50 billion devices that transmit useful data and control information via sensor networks. Although it's possible for a network to use wired sensors, the wireless variety provides easier deployment and wider flexibility. Wireless sensor networks will introduce significant changes to monitoring the environment to support wide-ranging applications, from smart power grids and intelligent transportation to fleet tracking, industrial control and home security. But, one factor that currently limits their use is the short time-span during which wireless sensors can do their job. If a wireless sensor depends fully on a battery and the battery is depleted the sensor becomes worthless.
