Now available in small-form pluggable (SFP) modules, 10-Gbit Ethernet transceivers offer an unparalleled combination of bandwidth density, design flexibility, and bandwidth per power dissipation. Optical transmit technology will become increasingly, then exclusively, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL)-based, allowing system designs with increased bandwidth per blade edge and lower power dissipation.
