Microscopic membranes arrive

Using graphene—the world's thinnest fabric material—physicists at The University of Manchester (Manchester, England, U.K.) and The Max-Planck Institute (Stuttgart, Germany) have created a new 1-mm-thick membrane type. The research team, led by Dr. Jannick Meyer and Professor Andre Geim, believes the tiny membranes can be used as a sieve to filter light gases, manufacture ultrafast miniature electromechanical switches, and image individual molecules with a high degree of accuracy.
