Recently, California Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation that will require all police to obtain a warrant from a judge before searching and electronic communications - including emails, text messages, and GPS location information. Earlier this year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that officers must obtain a warrant before that can search the data on a cell phone that was seized from people they arrest. The California legislation was supported by the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco, along with the American Civil Liberties Union, and the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
