Although electronic components have accounted for an increasing proportion of the typical vehicle bill-of-materials in recent years, the adoption of electric traction could be the ultimate step in recasting the modern car as an electrical device. As part of the high-voltage infrastructure of a hybrid or all-electric vehicle, the IGBT inverter power module is a key element of the e-drive system used to control the traction motor. A typical module contains a three-phase full bridge inverter, comprising six IGBT switches with freewheeling diodes. More than one IGBT device may be used in each switch position to achieve the required current rating and on-state resistance.
