Much has been said of the way the professional electronics community has embraced the use of single board computers (SBC) such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino and BeagleBone Black. These and similar boards have been the inspirationfor literally hundreds of projects. For relatively low volume industrial designs they have enabled bespoke and specialist equipment manufacturers to quickly build a prototype and take the product into production in a very short period of time. Open source hardware and software also encourages a widespread community of adopters, both makers and professional engineers, to share their experiences and challenges. Such platforms are readily available, cheap, proven and well tested, saving developers the time and expense of designing their own embedded platform and gearing up productionfor what would represent a high NRE compared to possible sales.
