As PCBs become more complex, as production speeds rise and as companies demand increased integrity, the need for reliable vision systems has grown. Vision systems perform PCB location, gauging, guidance, counting, flaw detection, identification and inspection; producing measurement data for effective process control and low defect rates. They do so at up to thousands of parts per minute. Vision systems are computers that can see. They can acquire one or more images using an optical, non-contact sensing device capable of processing, analyzing and measuring various characteristics so decisions can be made. The two most common applications of vision systems in PCB assembly are in component placement and solder defect inspection.
