Since it was first published in 2007, Alison Pickard's book has been chosen as a text for several courses in research methods around the world, and deservedly so, for it covered nearly all the essentials of conducting research in a clear and unfussy way. Pickard has taken the opportunity of writing a second edition to tidy up the original, which had a few small flaws. More importantly, there is new content here that adds considerable value to the book. The increased significance of online research is recognised by new content on web-based surveys (familiar enough) but also by descriptions of online interviews and focus groups (much less familiar).
