摘要

The interaction between the coarse and fine grain matrices affects the overall mechanical behavior of the mixture of these soils. This paper presents a set of laboratory data for Leighton Buzzard Sand fraction B representing coarse particles that show this effect, and uses scanning electron microscopy to demonstrate the linkage between particle size and particle shape. The experimental database is based on a laboratory study of the properties of saturated Leighton Buzzard Sand fraction B- mica, and Leighton Buzzard Sand fraction B- Leighton Buzzard Sand fraction E mixtures with various mix ratios under a 100 kPa effective stress in a biaxial testing apparatus. Coarse particles are observed to be rotund, whilst fine particles are platy and angular. In these experiments, no attempt was made to investigate the effects of different structures and fabrics. The specimens were prepared by spooning and surface-stirred to remove fabric. In spite of these limitations, a pattern of behavior suggests that the high compressibility and other clay like behavior is a result of finer fraction contents.
