It can be demonstrated that in many bypassing and decoupling applications, multi-layer ceramic (MLC) chip capacitors can be substituted for tantalum chip capacitors. The lower inherent ESR of ceramic devices permits a lower capacitance value to offer the same net impedance, so allowing the MLC chip to be more cost-effective. Phil Moore of Murata presents the case for circuit designers to consider these advantages and other reasons for specifying MLC.
