摘要

When Fred Weber was about to graduate from Harvard College's physics program in 1985, one of his professors, Ugo Gagliardi, urged him to "call Gordon Bell." Weber, now chief technology officer at Advanced Micro Devices, quotes Gagliardi as having told him, "Whatever Gordon Bell is doing is what you should be doing." Weber heeded the good advice, moving to Bell's startup, Encore, and setting off a cycle of learning about mentoring that continues to serve him-and fledgling engineers-well. Today at AMD, engineers fresh out of college are quickly given major responsibilities. Weber's mentor, Bell-now a senior researcher at Microsoft Corp.'s San Francisco research center-had left Digital Equipment Corp. in 1983 with two others to start Encore Computer in East Marl-borough, Mass. Encore put new hire Weber to work on a snooping-bus-based multiprocessor design-a mini-supercomputer that would compete with parallel-processing systems from Thinking Machines, Alliant, Sequent and others.
