Atmel equips ARM7 flash MCUs for duty in real-time systems

San Jose, Calif. — Broadening its ARM7-based offerings, Atmel Corp. is about to launch two flash microcontrollers equipped with embedded 10/100 Ethernet media-access controllers, a controller-area network (CAN) bus, full-speed (12-Mbit/second) USB 2.0 and a high-speed AES/3DES encryption engine. The units will be unveiled at next week's Embedded Systems Conference in Boston. Designed for extensively networked, real-time embedded systems, the AT91SAM7X128 and AT91SAM7X256 also have a 10-bit A/D converter, two serial peripheral interfaces, three UARTs, an eight-level priority interrupt controller and a full complement of supervisory functions. The 50-Mips MCUs pack 32 or 64 kbytes of SRAM and 128 or 256 kbytes of 25-nanosecond flash memory, which supports deterministic processing as required for real-time control systems.
