Shanghai, China — Afteryears of waiting and then waiting some more, China is finally getting down to the business of setting up a 3G network based on its TD-SCDMA domestic standard. The country's largest mobile operator, China Mobile Communications, doled out more than $750 million in contracts last week, a hopeful indication to chip makers that they will soon see some payback for a standard that has crawled to market. China Mobile, which has more than 300 million subscribers, is expected to spend $500 million on handsets toward the end of the year.
