China cranks up fabless startup efforts

China's planners are ratcheting up an initiative to seed as many as 30 fabless semiconductor startups that could individually grow to $200 million or more in annual revenue, according to an industry executive involved in the effort. The move comes at a time when venture capitalists are scaling back investments in U.S.-based chip startups. Thus far, however, China's fabless companies have posted lackluster results, hampered by narrow product portfolios and a shortfall of seasoned managers.
