Aconventional FIFO memory is an inelegant, inflexible first-in-first-out data buffering architecture. What if you don't necessarily want to read out information in the exact same order you stored it? For example, what if you want to prioritize a just-arriving data packet ahead of previously received ones? This concept, known as QOS (quality of service) is intended to differentiate data based not only on what it is (for example, high-priority, low-latency Internet telephony versus a low-priority bulk file transfer), but also on the networkresponsiveness level that a customer is paying for.
