PCI keeps on ridin'high

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, the PCI bus has grown to become the mainstay of the computer industry. PCI's popularity has given designers an array of low-cost silicon, which in turn has fueled additional growth. Generations of processors have come and gone, but the venerable PCI bus has remained on duty to tie the latest technology to legions of peripheral adapter boards. However, this success has not come without substantial efforts from the design community to extend performance specifications and develop new applications for PCI.
