In an age of multigabit-per-second serial interconnects, logic analyzers may seem to be relics of a bygone era in which parallel buses were king. "Not so," say engineers who have logged many hours working the kinks out of such serial buses as InfiniBand, XAUI (extended attachment-unit interface), and PCI Express. The logic analyzer is a surprisingly versatile tool. Because of this versatility, if you develop systems that use ultra-high-speed serial buses, a logic analyzer equipped with the appropriate analysis probes―sometimes still called preprocessors―can merit a place on your lab bench alongside a wideband digital scope and one or more protocol analyzers.
