Managing Low-Power in Ultra-Portable Applications

Today's ultra-portable devices, such as PDAs and smart phones, pack in as much functionality as PCs did only a few years. A key difference between these embedded portable devices and those old desktops is that not only does an applications processor have to run email, Internet, and entertainment applications, it also has to manage peripherals like buttons, displays, and cameras while consuming a fraction of the power. Achieving low-power with such high-performance is possible only through innovative advancements in processor architectures. However, to get the most out of these new architectures, developers must make accompanying changes to how they approach software design.
