HANDHELD CONSUMER DEVICES can give off only a fairly nominal amount of heat before becoming "too hot to handle," or they simply risk making a user uncomfortable. In addition, consumers are starting to expect their electronic devices to operate virtually silently, which can rule out incorporating a fan, a constraint at odds with the devices' higher processor speeds and denser packaging. Fortunately, designers can reduce or eliminate both hot spots and audible system noise using new heat-removal methods and technologies that combine to remove excessive heat and require a minimum of space, moving parts, and power.
