Although everyone associates India with software de- velopment, the country is also home to a growing IC-design-services industry. India's design companies are leveraging their expertise and have started offering IP (intellectual-property) cores along with traditional design and verification services. Most large semiconductor companies have IP and retain it in-house, according to Rohit Dubey, marketing manager for ASIC solutions and services with eInfochips. How- ever, the IP companies create cores and sell or license the cores to other players. Communications is a hot target for Indian companies, such as Wipro, elnfochips, HCL, and Sasken. The engineering community in India has also grasped the importance of verification in chip development—realizing that verification can absorb close to 70% of the design effort. Teams and even departments with a sole focus on verification are becoming the norm in almost all of the companies. And, gradually, many companies are emerging with the sole focus of providing verification services.
