Although everyone associates India with software development, the country is also home to a growing IC-design-services industry. India's design companies are leveraging their expertise and have started offering IP (intellectual-property) cores along with traditional design and verification services. Most large semiconductor companies have IP and retain it in-house, according to Rohit Dubey, marketing manager for ASIC solutions and services with eInfochips. However, the IP companies create cores and sell or license the cores to other players. Communications is a hot target for Indian companies, such as Wipro, eInfochips, HCL, and Sasken. The engineering community in India has also grasped the importance of verification in chip development-realizing that verification can absorb close to 70% of the design effort. Teams and even departments with a sole focus on verification are becoming the norm in almost all of the companies. And, gradually, many companies are emerging with the sole focus of providing verification services.
