Early this year, I wrote a column that raised a few hairs over at the ED AC (EDA Consortium, Reference 1). I addressed what I considered a low point for the EDA industry when, in the third quarter of last- year, EDAC's MSS (market-statistics services) broadened the definition of EDA to include IP (intellectual property) to make EDA-industry numbers appear better than they were. The semi- conductor industry was well into its recovery from the downturn, but this recovery hadn't yet trickled down to the EDA industry. Adding previously unrecorded IP revenue to EDA revenue allowed MSS to keep the EDA industry out of the red for the quarter.
