The external ac-dc power supply market is being pushed by two congruent trends: higher wattages and higher efficiencies. The move towards higher wattages is driven by OEM demands at the top end of the external power supply universe coupled with increasing threats at the lower end. The move towards higher-efficiency switchmode external power supplies is occurring as a result of government regulations, but pricing trends are becoming an even larger factor.
