Seeing red over dead LEDs

Years ago, I was the manufacturing engineer for a large electronics manufacturer. My employer had contracted a front-panel design to a major supplier for a new military-product contract. The design comprised a standard keypad with dome switches and three surface-mount LEDs as indicators of power-on, power-standby, and system-down conditions. A different color and location under the overlay window indicated each of these modes.
